Edison (Edson) Arantes do Nascimento, KBE was born on the 23rd of October 1940 in Tres Coraqoes Brazil and is best known as Pele. The 5ft 8in small former Brazilian forward was given the title Athlete of the Century by the International Olympic Committee and is rated as the greatest ever football player by many experts. He is the all-time top scorer in the history of the Brazil national football team and is the only footballer to be a part of three World Cup-winning teams.
Paolo Di Canio was born on the 9th of July 1968 in Rome Italy and is a retired footballer. Between 1985 and 2008 he played for several Italian, Scottish and English top clubs. In altogether 527 caps Paolo scored 135 goals. As a West Ham United player in 2000, he scored the BBC Goal of the Season in a match against Wimbledon. His volley is amongst the best goals in Premiership history.
This section is dedicated to our heroes of the winning 1966 World Cup team. England were chosen to host the finals between the 11th and 30th July and were later crowned champions for the first and at this present moment the only time. A goal from Martin Peters and a hatrick from Geoff Hurst was enough for England to see of West Germany in the final. This tournament was also well remembered as the Jules Rimet trophy was stolen from an exhibition display, there was a nationwide hunt for the famous trophy which came to an end when a dog called Pickles sniffed under some bushes and found the famous trophy wrapped in newspaper in a park in London.
This section is dedicated to the 1980 F.A Cup winning team. West Ham played Arsenal at Wembley on the 10th May 1980. The only goal of the game was scored after 13 minutes after Stuart Pearson’s shot deflected across the goalmouth and Trevor Brooking was quickest to react. As captain Billy Bonds walked the famous Wembley steps to lift the cup, to this day West Ham are the last team to win the F.A Cup and not be playing in the top flight. Peter Leslie Shilton was born in Leicester on 18 September 1949. He is a goalkeeping legend holding the record of being England's most capped with player with 125 appearances. Peter began his professional career at Leicester City, making his debut as a sixteen year old against Everton. He has played for 11 different clubs including Leicester, Stoke, Nottingham Forest, Southampton, Derby County and Plymouth Argyle. Peter won the league championship with Nottingham Forest in 1978 and in 1979 the FA Cup, European Cup and the UEFA Super Cup. He won a further European Cup Winners Medal in 1980. Peter made his first appearance for England under 23s in 1968 and earned 13 caps. He then began his illustrious career in the senior squad in 1970 when he remained for almost twenty years winning his 125th cap against Italy in the 1990 World Cup. Peter was named the PFA Player of the Year in 1978, and awarded the MBE in and later the OBE for his services to football.
George Best was born on the 22nd May 1946 in Belfast. George made his debut aged 17 for Manchester United making 361 appearances and scoring 138 goals. Whilst with United they were league champions twice and also won the UEFA European Cup. After Man U he had spells at Stockport County, Fulham and Hibernian as well as playing in the US league for Los Angeles Aztecs (twice), Fort Lauderdale Strikes and the San Jose Earthquakes. George was capped 37 times for Northern Ireland. George was European Footballer of the 1968 and in the same year also the Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year. He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by Queens University in Belfast. George died on 25 November 2005 aged 59 after a well documented battle with alcoholism. After this Belfast airport was renamed "George Best Belfast Airport" in his honour.
Geoffrey Charles Hurst was born on 8th of December 1941 in Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire but moved to Essex as a child. He is most remembered as the scorer of hat trick in the 1966 World Cup Final. In fact he is still the only player to have scored a hat trick in the World Cup Final. A little known fact about Geoff is that he also played one first class cricket match for Essex in 1962 and appeared over 20 times for the Essex Second XI before deciding that his future lie with football. Geoff started his playing career with West Ham United in 1959. He made 411 appearances, scoring 180 goals. He also won FA Cup and UEFA Cup Winners Medal whilst with West Ham. He then went on to play for Stoke City, West Bromwich Albion and then went to play in the NASL for the Seattle Sounders. He also managed Chelsea from 1979-1981. Geoff was made an MBE in 1975 and then knighted in 1998 and is much in demand for after dinner speaking and as a TV pundit.
Martin Stanford Peters was born 8th of November 1943 in Plaistow, East London. Martin is best remembered for scoring in England`s over West Germany win in the 1966 World Cup. Martin began his professional playing career with West Ham United and also had spells at Tottenham, Norwich City and Sheffield United. He was an extremely versatile playing in every position for West Ham, even goalkeeper! His many achievements have included the World Cup Winners Medal, two league cup winning medals with Tottenham, UEFA Cup for Spurs in 1972 and Norwich City Player of the Year for two successive seasons 1975/76 and 1976/77. Martin was capped 67 time for England and was awarded the MBE. He is now very much in demand as an after dinner speaker.
William Arthur Bonds (Billy) was born on 17th of September 1946 in Woolwich, London. Billy only played professional football for two teams. He began his career with Charlton Athletic in 1964 and went on to West Ham in 1967 where he remained for the rest of his playing career, which ended in 1988, playing 793 first team games. He won the FA cup twice with West Ham, and on retiring as a player was appointed youth team coach. He then took over as manager to the first team in February 1990 and in his first season the club were promoted. Billy was awarded the MBE in 1998.
Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro was born on 5th February 1985 on the island of Madeira. As a small child all Ronaldo wanted was to play football. He played for local teams on Madeira and when only 11 years old he went to Lisbon to join the youth academy at Sporting Lisbon. He quickly progressed t and in one season he played for the under 16’s, under 17’s, under 18’s, the B-team and the first team. He spent two seasons in the first team before moving to Manchester United to take up the famous no. 7 shirt in 2003. With Manchester United he has won the Premiership twice, the FA Cup, the League Cup twice, the Community Shield, the UEFA Champions League and the FIFA Club World Cup. He has been capped by Portugal 62 times and has won many awards including Portuguese Footballer of the Year in 2006-2007, UEFA Forward and UEFA Footballer of the Year in 2007-2008 and FIFA World Player of the Year in 2008.
Diego Armando Maradona was born on 30 October 1960 in Argentina. Diego started his professional carrier in his native Argentina playing for Argentinos Juniors, (playing his first game ten days short of his 16th birthday) and then Boca Juniors. He then moved to Europe in 1982 to play for Barcelona and then on to Napoli where he spent the next 7 years and Sevilla. He appeared 259 times for Napoli scoring 115 goals. Diego has won 91 caps playing for Argentina and appeared in four FIFA World Cup, being victorious in 1986. Among his many accolades Diego was jointly voted, with Pele, as the FIFA Play of the Century. He is now manager of the Argentine national team.
Neville Southall was born on 16 September 1958 in Llandudno, Wales. Neville started his goalkeeping career with Bury in 1980 and moved on to Everton where was to spend the next 17 years, albeit it with loan spells at Port Vale, Southend United and Stoke. He made a club record of 578 league appearances for Everton and won two League championships, two FA Cups and a European Cup Winners Cup. Neville was voted Footballer of The Year in 1985 which is unusual for a player in a goalkeeping position.He has been capped 92 times for Wales and was awarded the MBE in 1997.
Stephen George Bull was born on 8 March 1965 in Tipton. Steve began his professional career with West Bromwich Albion in making his senior debut in 1985. He then moved on to Wolverhampton Wanderers where is remained for 13 years before ending his professional career at Hereford United. While at Wolves he scored 306 goals in all competitions and holds the club's highest goal scoring record. Steve was capped 13 times by England and played in the 1990 World Cup. He was awarded an MBE in the Millennium New Year's honours list for his charity work and has since been made honorary Vice-President of Wolves.
Theo James Walcott was born on 16 March 1989 in Stanmore and started his footballing career at a very young age with Newbury and Swindon Town before joining Southampton in 2004, where he was the youngest player ever to play for their first team aged only 16. Many Premiership teams saw the potential in the young Theo and he eventually left Southampton for Arsenal in January 2006, scoring his first goal for them in the 2007 League Cup Final against Chelsea. Theo played for England for the first time in May 2006 when he became the youngest player to play in a full international when playing in a friendly against Hungary, aged only 17 years and 75 days.
Ronaldo de Assis Moreira was born on the 21st of March 1980 in Porto Alegre/Brazil and is known as "Ronaldinho".The attacking midfielder plays football for the Brazil national team and AC Milan. The FIFA World Player of the Years 2004 and 2005 scored 144 goals in 339 caps for his so far four clubs in Brazil, France, Spain and Italy. As essential part of the Seleção, he scored 32 goals in 84 appearances, winning the Copa America in 1999, the FIFA World Cup 2002, the Confederations Cup 2005 and an Olympic Bronze medal in 2008.
Thierry Daniel Henry was born on the 17th of August 1977 in Les Ulis France and is a football striker who plays for the France national team and FC Barcelona in Spain. During his time at Arsenal (1999-2007) he scored 226 goals in all competitions and won two league titles and three FA Cups with the Gunners. In 2006 Henry captained Arsenal in the Champions League final, where he collected the Runners Up medal against his current team FC Barcelona. Henry won the 1998 FIFA World Cup and the Euro 2000 with the French national squad and scored 48 goals in 108 appearances for his country. This makes Thierry Henry the most successful French football player in history, surpassing Michel Platini.
Michael James Owen was born on the 14th of December 1979 in Chester Cheshire and is a football striker playing for Newcastle United. He is currently England's fourth-highest scorer of all time with forty goals for the National team. The 5ft 8in player played for Liverpool and Real Madrid before joining Newcastle in 2005. In the 2000/01 season, Owen goals were vital in securing Liverpool five trophies, together they won League Cup, FA Cup, UEFA Cup, Charity Shield and the European Super Cup.
James Peter Greaves was born on 20th of February 1940 in East Ham, London. Jimmy started his playing career with Chelsea in 1957, scored on his debut and was the top goal scorer in the league twice while at Chelsea. He then had a short spell at AC Milan but quickly returned to English football with Tottenham, where he stayed for nine years. Again he was the League top goal scorer (4 times). He won the FA cup twice with Spurs and also the European Cup Winners Cup. Jimmy then played for West Ham 1970/71 before retiring. He came out of retirement in 1975 playing for Brentford Town, Chelmsford City and finally Barnet. Jimmy was the unfortunate player who was injured in an earlier round of World Cup Finals in 1966 and was replaced in the team by Geoff Hurst. Hurst scored in the quarter final and this kept out Jimmy out of the final. However he made 57 appearances for England, scoring 44 goals.
Anthony Peter Gale was born on 19th of November 1959 in Westminster, London. He played most of his long career as a defender first with Fulham and then with West Ham. He also played for Blackburn Rovers and helped them win the 1994-1995 Premier League Title. Unfortunately Tony is also famously remembered for being sent off in the 1991 FA Cup semi final against Nottingham Forest when playing for West Ham. Tony is now a regular contributor on Sky Sports and is a much in demand after dinner speaker.
Anthony Richard Cottee was born in Plaistow in the East End of London on 11th of July 1965. This makes him a true `Eastender`. Tony joined the team he supported as a child - West Ham United, scoring on his first team debut against the traditional enemy of West Ham - Tottenham Hotspur! Whilst at West Ham he was awarded the PFT Young Footballer of the Year Award (1986). Tony became the most expensive player to be signed by a British Club when he signed for Everton in 1988 and scored a hat-trick on his debut. He went to re-join West Ham before playing in Malaysia for Selangor, then returned to the UK playing for Leicester City, Norwich, Barnet, where he was player-manager and finishing his playing career with two games for Barnet. Tony achieved the `honour` of playing for a different team in all four division of English Football, and was capped 7 times for England at Senior level and 8 for the under 21`s. Tony now works for Sky Sports and Radio 5 Live as a sports pundit.
Philip Benjamin Neil Frederick Parkes was born on 8th August 1950 in Staffordshire. Phil started his professional career with Walsall in 1968, and he joined QPR in 1970, before moving on to West Ham in 1979 for what was a then record fee for a goalkeeper of 500,000 GBP. He has the distinction of playing exactly the same number of games for both QPR and West Ham, 344. He won a FA Cup Winners medal with West Ham in 1980, beating Arsenal 1-0. Phil earned his only England cap in 1974 playing against Portugal. Phil now spends a lot of his time as a much respected goalkeeping coach.
Sir Trevor David Brooking was born on 2 October, 1948 in Barking, Essex. Trevor is well known for his association with West Ham United. He joined them in 1967 and made 636 appearances, scoring 103 goals. He won the FA Cup twice in 1975 and 1980, scoring the only goal in a 1-0 win over Arsenal. After West Ham he made two appearances for Cork City FC in 1985. He has also managed West Ham as a caretaker manager on two separate occasions in 2003. Trevor won 47 caps for England and in December 2003 he joined the FA as Director of Football Development. Trevor became 'Sir Trevor' when he was knighted for his services to football in 2004.
Gary Winston Lineker was born on 30 November 1960. Gary's football career began at Leicester City in 1976. He moved to Everton in 1985 where he scored an impressive 38 goals in only 52 games. He then moved on to Barcelona where he won the Copa del Rey and the European Cup Winners' Cup. He returned to England in 1989 joining Spurs and won an FA Cup Winners medal with them. Gary then went to Japan and joined Nagoya Grampus Eight where he played for two seasons before he retired from professional football. Gary won 80 caps playing for England and was captain in 1990. He was top scorer in the 1986 World Cup and won the Golden Boot, the only Englishman to have done so. He has been the PFA Player of the Year and in 1990 won the FIFA Fair Play Award as he has the rare distinction of never having received either a yellow or red card in his entire professional career. Gary is now equally famous for his Walker's Crisps adverts and as the anchorman on BBC's Match of the Day. He was awarded the OBE for his services to football.
